Polyscias Scutellaria
Shield Aralia, Plum Aralia, Umbrella Tree
Description of Polyscias Scutellaria
Polyscias scutellaria, commonly known as the shield leaf aralia or umbrella tree, is a tropical evergreen shrub or small tree native to the Pacific Islands, Southeast Asia, and parts of Australia. Characterized by its attractive, glossy, umbrella-like leaves that can grow up to 20-30 cm in length, this plant features dark green foliage with leaflets radiating from a central point, creating a unique and ornamental appearance. Mature specimens typically reach heights of 1 to 3 meters and produce small, inconspicuous greenish or white flowers in panicles during the summer, which attract various pollinators. Thriving in well-drained, moist soil and preferring partial shade to full sunlight, Polyscias scutellaria is often used in landscaping for its lush foliage. It can also be grown indoors as a houseplant, valued for its air-purifying qualities. Its relatively low-maintenance care requires regular watering and occasional pruning to encourage bushier growth.
