Spathodea campanulata
Fountain Tree, African Tulip Tree, Pichkari, Nandi Flame
Description of Spathodea campanulata
Spathodea campanulata, commonly known as the Fountain Tree, African Tulip Tree, Pichkari, or Nandi Flame, is a member of the Bignoniaceae family. This striking tree is recognized for its vibrant, cup-shaped flowers and is native to Africa, where its seeds are edible and commonly consumed. The tree's soft, light brownish-white wood is prized for carving and drum-making. Additionally, the hard central portion of its fruit has been historically used for hunting. In traditional medicine, various parts of the tree—such as the bark, seeds, flowers, and roots—are utilized for their therapeutic properties. The bark is known for its laxative and antiseptic effects, often chewed or boiled in water to create soothing baths for newborns to treat body rashes, while also being applied to swollen areas for relief.
